Petite Wine Traveler: Passport Postcards
Happy Sunday, friends! Welcome back to Passport Postcards, your weekly dreamy escape into wine, travel, and the art of living beautifully. This week, I’m unveiling something truly special, a curated journey through hotels where art isn’t just decoration, but the very soul of the place.
Wine and art flow from the same source: place, time, passion. In these destinations, architecture, sculpture, design, and vineyard life converge to create immersive experiences that linger beyond a glass. This fall, I'm inviting you to sip slowly, walk slowly, and see with a heart attuned to beauty.
1. Villa / Château La Coste — Provence, France
Set across rolling lavender fields and olive groves, La Coste is a living sculpture garden.
Art: Tadao Ando’s pavilion, works by Louise Bourgeois, Ai Weiwei, Richard Serra, Lee Ufan, and more line the trails.
Wine: Their biodynamic Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Vermentino glimmer with Provence’s sunlight.
Pairing: Vermentino with herbed goat cheese and heirloom vegetables from the estate garden.
Dining: Hélène Darroze’s restaurant, where every dish feels like art; local, seasonal, thoughtful.
Do: Wander the art & architecture trail at sunrise, let sculptures surprise you between olive trees.
2. Hotel Marqués de Riscal — La Rioja, Spain
A vineyard hotel turned architectural icon.
Art & Design: Frank Gehry’s undulating titanium façade mirrors wine in motion.
Wine: Rioja Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Estate blends define the house style.
Pairing: A reserva Rioja with roasted piquillo peppers and local mushrooms.
Dining: Gastronomic Spanish cuisine, wine-paired menus in spaces that echo the building’s curves.
Do: Tour the “City of Wine” complex, experience vinothérapie spa rituals (think grape baths), stroll through Gehry’s vistas against vineyard lines.
3. The Dolder Grand — Zurich, Switzerland
A hotel that doubles as a museum.
Art: A rotating collection of over 100 works by Warhol, Dalí, Hirst, and many contemporary artists.
Wine: Swiss Pinot Noir, Chasselas, both delicate, elegant, precise.
Pairing: Chasselas with lightly smoked trout and alpine herbs.
Dining: Gourmet menus in art-adorned salons, every dish composed like a canvas.
Do: Walk the gallery halls, attend exhibition openings, let the architectural lines guide your gaze.
4. The Yeatman — Porto, Portugal
Where Port wine and art embrace the Douro river.
Art & Aesthetic: Murals, tile art, and sculptural installations reflect Portugal’s heritage and wine culture.
Wine: Port vintages, Douro blends curated in the hotel’s cellars.
Pairing: A fine Tawny Port with salted dark chocolate or fig-studded pastries.
Dining: Tables with panoramic river views, menus tailored to the wine cellar, art subtly framing every seat.
Do: Explore the wine library, stroll the terraces, catch golden light over the river and tiles.
5. Teufelhof Basel — Basel, Switzerland
A hotel built as a gallery you live in.
Art: Many guest rooms are “art rooms” immersive installations by local and international artists.
Wine: Swiss and regional boutique wines selected to match each artistic mood.
Pairing: Pinot Gris with cheese boards, savory tarts, seasonal fruit.
Dining: The restaurant feels like walking into an exhibit, dishes plated with intention, service in gallery spaces.
Do: Stay in an art-themed room, attend gallery nights, walk Basel’s art district (Kunstmuseum, Fondation Beyeler) just steps away.
Autumn invites us to slow, to observe, to feel the textures of light and shadow. In these hotels, art and wine become one: every corridor, sip, sculpture, and sunset feels intentional. They are places that whisper, “look closely, taste deeply, witness beauty.”
As the calendar turns toward harvest and reflection, let’s carry forward a new curiosity: that every stay, every wine, every view can become its own gallery.
Until next week xx
